A Description of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Lower Limb Varicose Veins Among 2021 Cohort Students at FKIK UKRIDA

Abstract

Lower limb varicose veins are abnormal dilations of veins caused by impaired venous return, which can lead to pain, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, and chronic complications. Risk factors include sex, age, and lifestyle factors such as prolonged static activities. Adequate knowledge plays an important role in shaping preventive attitudes and behaviors. University students, as a productive age group, engage in activities that may increase risk; therefore, it is important to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding lower limb varicose veins. Objective to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of FKIK UKRIDA students from the 2021 cohort regarding lower limb varicose veins. This study employed a descriptive research design, with the entire population of 160 students included as the sample. The majority of mahasiswats demonstrated good knowledge, particularly regarding risk factors; however, understanding of symptoms remained low. In terms of attitudes, most mahasiswats showed positive attitudes toward self-examination when symptoms arise. Regarding behavior, most mahasiswa had implemented preventive measures such as maintaining body weight, but routine medical check-ups were still low. These findings are consistent with previous studies indicating that good knowledge is associated with positive attitudes and preventive behaviors toward varicose veins, although awareness of symptoms and early examination still needs improvement. Students demonstrated good knowledge of lower limb varicose veins, with generally positive preventive attitudes and behaviors. However, understanding of symptoms and consistency in routine examinations need to be improved to support early detection and prevent complications.
